So
What's it gonna be?
Fight
Or flight?
Self help Phobias are age-old. The long gone cave men and women learned
to respond to the sight of danger with the fight or flight
response when faced with a death threatening situation whereby they
were often confronted by a hungry lion or a rather annoyed grizzly bear.
Adrenaline
pumped through their bodies enabling them to prepare themselves to
reach safety before becoming the main the meal of the day for the beast
that stood before them.
Fear
overwhelmed their nervous system,
initially they may have felt faint, their heart beat rose, they were
caused to sweat, they had a rush of panic come over them, they would
quiver and shake, they felt flushed, all pumped and revved up to simply
get the hell out of that beasts face
before being eaten alive.
These
internal reactions and emotions, experienced within seconds of
encountering danger, occurred again and again when faced with the same
situation everytime. This is because the brain learned in order for the
cave person to reach safety in a dangerous situation these responses
were necessary for their protection.
It
only takes one
experience for the brain to learn a specific response to react to a
given situation. Once learned it will apply the same response to each
significant event.
In
the case of the cave men and women it is quite understandable to have
this adrenaline pumping fight or flight
response for the safety of their lives. However, it becomes somewhat of
a problem when we are experiencing this same response when confronted
by an insignificant situation which merely should not even prove
troublesome.
Unfortunately
society has come to a point where
these learned responses and reactions have been distorted through
evolution thus misrepresenting human perceptions of what we should
fear. Our phobias are usually installed in our minds from childhood.
This is why fear in children
should promptly be corrected so they don't
grow into fearful adults.
A
self help phobia is a form of fear
that is completely irrational in it's true nature and is usually deemed
acceptable because most people believe it is incurable.
Ones
that
need to be managed are those that produce improper fear, for instance,
when faced with a tiny harmless spider, known as arachnophobia, or when
interacting with other people, known as social phobia.
There
is
an exhaustive list of fears that people experience in their day to day
lives and simply accept it as part of who they are because they think
it is completely out of their control and live all their lives in this
unnecessary state.
Here
are some common self help phobias - fear
of death, social environments, love commitment, anxiety disorders,
heights, the dark, snakes, dental surgeries, feet, birds, long words,
public speaking, job interviews, relationships, disease, animals,
driving, germs, rejection, failure, blushing, examination, needles,
spiders, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, sex, love, stuttering, flying,
bugs, fear, hospital, travel, ablutophobia, thunder, trees, elevators.
We
only have two innate fears with which we are born and they are fear of
loud noises and fear of falling. Every other phobia from which you
suffer has been learned through negative experiences in your past
life.
Everything that has been learned
can be unlearned so self help phobias can be
overcome just as easily as they were learned.
You
first need to realise that it is you, yourself that is triggering off
these responses albeit unconsciously. You are reacting in the exact
same way everytime you experience a specific event of which you fear.
These internal sensations have remained with you for so long that they
are deeply ingrained in your unconscious mind
and cannot be reconditioned
through sheer will power and courage.
However
there are various
alternative treatments
beyond conventional methods that can be used to
totally recondition the mind over these negative patterns that trigger
these emotions of fear.
Some
alternative treatments can re-program your
mind eliminating all significant emotions that trigger off burdensome
behaviours or reactions such as phobias, addictions, etc. even if you
have had them for years. Your brain learns very
quickly and can unlearn anything that has been previously learned.
