Self-Help Guide To
ADDICTIONS

Everyone has addictions or bad habits of some sort over which they would like more control. Most of which are quite petty and are generally harmless to ourselves and others e.g. sex, stuttering, chocolate, internet porn, computer games, shopping, etc.

These compulsions however harmless can still be annoying and somewhat displeasing to the sufferer. They need to be controlled and shouldn't really have become habits in the first place at all.

More serious forms are those which prove harmful to ourselves or to others e.g. alcoholism, tobacco/smoking, caffeine, unhealthy foods, drugs abuse, gambling, etc. These types of compulsions definitely need resolving before the damage proves fatal.

You first need to understand that your obsession with a particular behaviour is not something over which you have direct control. Without sufficient knowledge of the root causes of how it first took effect it is difficult to overcome or replace the habit. Addiction treatment centres or organisations do not combat this fundamental factor of the psychology of addictions. However there are many holistic treatments and alternative therapies available to eliminate these problems.

You infact do not need to know how the obsession first took effect in order to eliminate it. You most probably are not even aware of it's cause because it is held deep within your unconscious mind. You are literally on auto pilot with no control over what you are doing. Even if you are resisting it and battling against overcoming it with pure conscious will you cannot but persists the obsession.

The fight against your unconscious mind is completely fruitless. You can use all the will power in your possession to try and change your behaviour but the unconscious will do anything in it's power to protect you from change.

For those who do manage to over power their unconscious through sheer conscious effort by way of force will inevitably have to pay the price through an alternative measure to replace the old behaviour. The universal laws work accordingly, if you go against the natural flow of energy it will always make you compensate by balancing out the disharmony caused by way of force through you in some way.

Secondly, you need to understand that your addiction first took effect as a result of a cause. Every cause has an effect and every effect a cause. The root cause of any compulsion is some sort of anxiety concerning a particularly worrisome aspect of your life that seeks comforting. The anxiety triggers the cravings and tempts you to indulge in your compulsion to comfort the very anxiety that is causing the compulsion.

This is why some people can overcome their addiction easier than others. It is because they do not have underlying anxieties seeking comfort so the unconscious will allow them to kick the habit because it is not serving them in anyway. Will power and strength rarely have anything to do with anything.

The key is to access the part of your brain which has complete dominion over your conscious mind. You can use various mind tools to access it and make the appropriate changes required.
